The short answer
Centeringmeasures how evenly the printed image is positioned within the card's border, expressed as a ratio like 55/45 or 60/40 — the percentage split between the larger border margin and the smaller one, on both the left/right axis and the top/bottom axis. A card with equal borders all the way around is 50/50. A ratio further from 50/50 means more of the border crowds one side, and grading companies cap the maximum achievable grade based on how far off-center a card is — independent of how clean the corners, edges, and surface are.
Why it caps the grade on its own
PSA, BGS, SGC, and CSG all score centering as one of four graded factors (alongside corners, edges, and surface), but centering behaves differently from the other three: a bad corner ding is local damage, while off-center printing is a whole-card manufacturing defect that shows up the moment you look at the card. Because of that, most grading scales treat centering as a hard ceiling — roughly 60/40 or worse on the front usually locks a card out of a Gem Mint 10 regardless of how perfect everything else is, and 80/20 or worse typically caps a card well below Near Mint, even on an otherwise pristine surface. Front vs back — why the front counts more
- Front centering is weighted heaviest. The front image is what a buyer sees first and what the card is displayed as, so grading companies hold it to the tighter standard — typically 55/45 or better is expected for a top grade.
- Back centering gets more tolerance. A back that runs 70/30 rarely blocks a 10 by itself if the front is tight, because the back is rarely the focal point. It still factors in, just at a looser threshold than the front.
- Both axes matter. A card can be tight left-to-right but loose top-to-bottom (or the reverse) — check both, not just the axis that looks obviously off at a glance.
How to check it yourself before submitting
You don't need a grading company's equipment to get a useful read on centering — a ruler and a flat surface get you most of the way there:
- Measure the border, not the whole card. With the card flat and square to you, measure the white or colored border width on the left edge and the right edge in millimeters. Divide the larger measurement by the total (left + right) to get the ratio — e.g., 3mm left border and 2mm right border is a 60/40 split favoring the left.
- Repeat top to bottom. Same method, measuring the top border against the bottom border.
- Use a bright, even light. Shadows and glare distort how a border margin looks to the eye far more than they distort a ruler measurement — trust the numbers over a quick glance under bad lighting.
- Compare against the base set, not just this copy. Some sets run with an inherent design bias — a slightly heavier border on one side across the whole print run — so a mild offset that matches every other copy of that card usually isn't a defect worth worrying about.
Why centering varies even within the same box
Centering is a print-and-cut defect, not a handling defect — it happens at the factory, not after the card leaves the pack. Sheets of cards are printed and then cut into individual cards by machines that can drift slightly out of alignment over a print run, so two copies of the exact same card from the same box can have noticeably different centering. That randomness is part of why a well-centered copy of an otherwise common card can sell for a real premium over a poorly centered copy of the same card — the scarcity is in the centering, not the card itself.
Should you submit a borderline card?
If your own ruler check comes back close to a grading company's published centering threshold, treat it as a coin-flip rather than a guarantee — in-hand measurement with a ruler is close to, but not identical to, the equipment graders use.
