What Is a Bowman Chrome University Card?

Bowman Chrome University takes the college football/basketball checklist from Bowman University and prints it on refractor stock — the product that brought Topps its first fully NIL-licensed Chrome cards. Here's what defines it and how it differs from the rest of the Bowman Chrome family.

The short answer

Bowman Chrome University is the chromium, refractor-finish version of Bowman University — Topps's college football and basketball checklist, printed on the same reflective stock as Bowman Chrome. It debuted in 2022 as Topps's first release to carry real school logos, colors and uniforms under Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) licensing — the standard paper 2021-22 Bowman University set the year before had no Chrome parallel and couldn't yet use full school branding.

What makes it its own product

  • Football and basketball only.Like base Bowman University, Bowman Chrome University has no baseball checklist — it's a separate product line from Bowman Chrome Draft, which covers baseball's MLB Draft class instead.
  • The first fully NIL-licensed Chrome release. 2022 Bowman Chrome University Football was Topps's official entry into NIL cards with real school uniforms and logos, rather than the generic or masked branding earlier college-themed products had to use before NIL rules changed in 2021.
  • Refractor tiers apply.Like any Chrome product, Bowman Chrome University ships a base refractor plus named colored parallels and a numbered SuperFractor, so the same player's card can trade at very different prices depending on the refractor color and print run.
  • No Topps pro-league follow-up.Because Topps doesn't hold NFL or NBA rookie-card licenses, a Bowman Chrome University card is typically the only Topps Chrome card a player will ever have — his eventual pro rookie card comes from Panini once he's drafted, not a Topps release.
