What Is CGC Card Grading?

CGC Cards is a third-party trading card grading service run by Certified Collectibles Group (CCG), the same parent company behind CGC comic book grading, CGC stamps, and NGC coin grading. CGC started by grading Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and other non-sport trading cards, then expanded into sports cards. In July 2023, CCG merged its dedicated sports card grader — CSG (Certified Sports Guaranty), launched in 2021 — into the CGC Cards brand. Every card graded under the CSG name still carries the same authenticity guarantee as a current CGC Cards holder; only the label branding changed.

• Scale— 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint), with half-point grades, plus a rare Pristine 10 tier above Gem Mint 10 for cards judged flawless under magnification. See how grading actually works for what centering, corners, edges, and surface mean generally.
• Label— its own holder and label design, distinct from PSA's red label, BGS's sub-grade box, and SGC's black holder. Cards graded before the 2023 merger may still be in a CSG-branded holder rather than a CGC Cards one; both are legitimate and covered by the same guarantee.
• Sub-grades— available as an optional add-on similar to BGS, rather than shown by default on every label.
• Track record— younger than PSA, BGS, and SGC in the sports card space specifically, though CCG itself has decades of grading history in comics and other collectibles. Resale liquidity on CGC/CSG-graded sports cards is improving but still trails the big three on most cards.

1. Check sold comps for that exact card in a CGC or CSG holder first.Buyer familiarity still varies a lot by card type and sport — confirm real demand before submitting anything you plan to resell quickly.
2. Cross-hobby cards are a natural fit.If you also collect Pokémon, Magic, or other non-sport trading cards alongside sports cards, CGC is one of the few graders with strong standing across both.
3. Compare against the established players in PSA vs BGS vs SGC vs CSG before deciding — for most cards you plan to flip quickly, PSA or BGS still has the deepest buyer pool.
