What Is Fanatics Authentic?

Fanatics Authenticis Fanatics' memorabilia authentication business -- the division that organizes autograph signings and game-used/event-worn memorabilia programs under Fanatics' official licensing relationships with leagues, teams, and players, then backs each item with its own serial-numbered hologram and a matching certificate of authenticity. It's the same basic authentication model as Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA) and Steiner Sports -- witness the signing or tag the item at the event, then hologram and certify it -- run at Fanatics' much larger scale, since Fanatics holds official memorabilia and autograph licensing across the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and college sports rather than operating as a single independent agency. Steiner Sports itself became part of Fanatics Authentic when Fanatics acquired its name, inventory, and intellectual property in 2019.

• Witnessed signings. For autographed memorabilia, a Fanatics Authentic representative is present when the athlete signs -- the same eyewitness model UDA and Steiner built their reputations on, rather than examining a signature after the fact the way a third-party autograph authenticator does.
• Event-used and game-worn tagging.For items tied to a specific game or event -- a ball, a jersey, a piece of equipment -- Fanatics Authentic's licensing deals let it tag and document the item at the point of use, pairing the documentation with a hologram rather than relying on after-the-fact provenance research.

• Official licensing at league scale.Because Fanatics holds official partnerships across multiple leagues and players' associations, Fanatics Authentic memorabilia is distributed through Fanatics.com, team stores, and league-branded retail rather than a single storefront the way Steiner or UDA historically operated on their own.

Fanatics runs several distinct collectibles divisions under one parent company, and it's easy to mix them up. Fanatics Authentic is specifically the memorabilia and autograph authentication arm. It's separate from Fanatics Collect (the auction and marketplace platform built from the rebranded Goldin Auctions), Fanatics Grading (third-party card grading), and Fanatics Live (livestream breaking and auctions). Fanatics Authentic memorabilia can end up listed for sale on Fanatics Collect or elsewhere, but the authentication itself -- the witnessed signing or game-used tagging and the hologram -- is Fanatics Authentic's job, not the marketplace's.

• Confirm the hologram matches the certificate. As with any hologram-based system, a certificate with no corresponding hologram on the item, or numbers that don't match, is a red flag worth walking away from.
• Older Steiner inventory predates the rollup. Items signed or sold before the 2019 acquisition were authenticated under the original independent Steiner Sports; verify the hologram through the current Fanatics Authentic lookup rather than assuming the ownership change matters for authentication purposes.
• Authentication is not a card grade.A Fanatics Authentic hologram confirms a witnessed signing or a documented game-used item -- it says nothing about a signed card's centering, corners, edges, or surface. Submit a signed card separately to PSA, BGS, SGC, or CSG for a numeric grade.

• vs. Upper Deck Authenticated and Steiner Sports — the underlying model is the same (witness the signing, hologram it, certify it), but UDA remains a single manufacturer's in-house arm and Steiner now operates as one brand folded inside Fanatics Authentic rather than an independent company. Fanatics Authentic runs across many leagues and licensors at once rather than one brand's own signings.
• vs. MEARS Authentication — MEARS specializes in research-driven grading of game-used bats, jerseys, and equipment that arrive without a witnessed paper trail, scoring items on an A1-A10 scale against historical evidence. Fanatics Authentic instead documents items at the point of signing or game use, so there's no after-the-fact research scale involved.
• vs. PSA/DNA, JSA, and Beckett Authentication — these services examine a signature independently, often years after it was made, comparing it against an exemplar database of known-genuine samples. Fanatics Authentic only certifies signings and game-used items it organized itself -- it isn't a submission service for an autograph you already own from an unrelated source.
