What Is PCGS Grading?

PCGS stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, founded in 1986 by David Hall. It is the largest and most recognized third-party grader in the coin hobby — the coin-world equivalent of what PSA is for sports cards — but PCGS itself does not grade sports cards. If you have a card and you're searching for “PCGS grading,” the company you actually want is PSA — a separate but closely related brand.

• Same founder.David Hall founded PCGS for coins in 1986, then founded PSA for sports cards and other collectibles in 1991. Both companies were built on the same idea — independent, third-party grading and encapsulation to standardize condition and cut down on fraud — just applied to different collectibles.
• Same parent company for years. PCGS and PSA operated for decades as sister divisions of Collectors Universe, which also owns other authentication brands. The two companies still share DNA in how they run submissions and tamper-evident holders, which is part of why collectors assume PCGS covers cards too.
• Overlapping collector base.A lot of collectors move between coins and sports cards, so it's an easy slip to type “PCGS” when you mean the grader for your cards.
• Similar-looking holders.PCGS coin slabs and PSA card slabs use the same tamper-evident philosophy, so a search for one brand's holder style often surfaces the other.

PCGS grades and authenticates rare coins and paper currency on a 70-point numeric scale, encapsulating each piece in its own tamper-evident holder with a certification number you can look up online — the same basic model PSA uses for cards, just for a different collectible entirely. If you have coins, PCGS (or its coin-grading competitor NGC) is the right place to submit. If you have sports cards, PCGS submission guides and forms won't apply to you.
